Purpose of Position:

The Department of African American Studies invites applications for the position of Instructor/Assistant Professor to begin in Academic Year 2018-2019. Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking a dynamic individual with a track record of teaching, research, and service.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching is the primary responsibility of this position and scholarship is not necessary for contract renewal. However, scholarship grounded in the field of African American Studies is required for promotion to Associate or Full Professor on the term track. Scholarship is defined very broadly as discovery, integration, application, and teaching.

This may include:

  • Research of a scholarly and/or creative nature.

  • Contribution to the faculty member’s discipline of origin.

  • Contribution to scholarship of teaching and learning African American Studies through activities such as but not limited to, lectures, performances, and publications.

Required Qualifications:

M.A., MFA, or other terminal degree in any area of the African Diaspora, and/or in the traditional disciplines of the Humanities and Social Sciences (e.g., urban studies, cultural studies, sociology, political science, history, gender studies, etc.)

All candidates must have experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in any area of the African Diaspora, and/or in the traditional disciplines of the Humanities and Social Sciences (e.g., urban studies, cultural studies, sociology, political science, history, gender studies, etc.)

Area of scholarship is open, though expertise in the African Diaspora is desirable. Candidates with scholarship in the traditional disciplines of the Humanities and Social Sciences (e.g., urban studies, cultural studies, sociology, political science, history, gender studies, etc.) are also welcome to apply if their scholarship focuses on the Black and/or African experiences.
