I want a boyfriend, but I cannot stop eating – Dear Aunt Dora

Dear Aunt Dora.

I am a young woman aged 26.  I have lived in the US for the last 10 years.

I came with my parents here at the age of 16. My mother was a house wife then and she cooked great homemade African meals. I had a great figure.

When she got a job, things changed. She stopped cooking and we started eating takeaway meals. We ate fries, cheesesteaks, burgers, potato chips, doughnuts, fried chicken and all fatty meals out here.

I have since grown fat at an alarming rate and my doctor has just diagnosed me with obesity. I weigh 270 pounds. I look ten times older than my age and people laugh at me on the streets. I cannot stop eating and my weight just won’t go down. I cannot get a boyfriend or even a man to marry me. My self-esteem is shattered and I feel suicidal right now. Please help me. – Amina S.

Dear Amina,

Take control of your life! Obesity is a serious health condition, with with 36.5% of U.S. adults diagnosed with the disease. Obesity can cause related complications which include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death.

Why is your diet your mother’s responsibility? At 16 a Kenyan girl has already sweated over the ugali, spent countless hours cutting vegetables, and cooking for a 8-person battalion breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you want a husband, throw away those chips, go to your mother, sit at her feet, and learn from her. The kitchen is not your enemy. You will find your figure there.

A man will choose a woman who has confidence and self-esteem, no matter her body. In the case of the African man, a woman with some meat on her bones is highly desired! At the end of day, love yourself before anyone else does.

And for the people laughing at you in the streets, let them. Even hyenas have their place in this world. Talk to your doctor immediately and get the support you need.
